Livingston, NJ, May 20, 2009 — The New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals presented Graham-Pelton Consulting nominee Joseph E. Stampe its Robert J. Smythe Award for Outstanding Professional Fundraiser at last night’s 2009 Excellence in Philanthropy awards dinner.

While many viewers of the hit Fox Television show House MD™ are familiar with the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, in reality the University Medical Center at Princeton is the hospital serving this community.  Since the University Medical Center resides in a downtown area making it difficult to expand, a decision was made to move outside the city, in nearby Plainsboro, to allow the hospital to better reach the changing regional demographics of the community and modernize on a larger site.  You could say this is a rare case of fiction becoming reality.

Stampe serves as the Vice President of Development for the Princeton HealthCare System Foundation . He is responsible for all fundraising activities across the system, overseeing annual funds, corporate and foundation giving, special fundraising events, major giving, planned giving, donor relations and all special fundraising campaigns, including Design for Healing - The Campaign for the New University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCP).

Design for Healing is the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of the Princeton HealthCare System Foundation and seeks to raise $115 million in support of the new $440 million+ state-of-the-art hospital that is scheduled to open in 2011. Under Stampe’s direction fundraising progress to date is at 71.3%.  This includes a $25 million challenge pledge from private donors David and Patricia Atkinson, which at the time was the largest gift ever made to a New Jersey hospital. Stampe also secured a $6 million grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation that will support the creation of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Community Health Center at UMCP’s new state-of-the-art campus.

The award, named in memory of Robert J. Smythe, a longstanding member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals who exemplified dedication and service to the non-profit and fundraising community, recognizes an individual who brings honor, distinction and a distinguished record of excellence in philanthropy.
